Have you seen the news?

Health care is such a fast changing environment it's difficult to keep up with what is happening in the NHS.

With some many different sources of information, it can sometime be hard to know where to start, especially with the increase in fake news on social media and beyond.

But we can help.

Our Daily Health News service scans feeds from over 60 different sources every day. We review them and the ones we think you will find most useful are then posted onto our Blogger site, giving you just one place to look if you want to find out what is new in health and the NHS.

We don't include a lot of clinical items (you can find more of that via our Twitter account). Our feeds include:
  • Local media coverage of Northamptonshire health issues
  • NHS, DoH and other government sites
  • Think tanks like the King's Fund, Nuffield Trust and Health Foundation
  • Royal Colleges
  • Voluntary groups and charities
  • Health related news sites like OnMedica
  • Mainstream media sites like the BBC, and newspapers including the Daily Telegraph and the Guardian
You can access this service in a number of different ways:
  • Visit the web site
  • Subscribe to our RSS feed (you can find it here)
  • Most conveniently - you can subscribe to the service by email and receive one message a day with a digest of all the news, complete with links to take you straight to the item. Simply enter your email address here and you will be sent a confirmation email. Once you have clicked on the link in the email your subscription will be live. We will never use your email address for anything else or share it with anyone, and you can unsubscribe from the service at any time.
Our Daily Health News Service is an easy way to keep up to date with the issues facing the NHS and health care and we hope you will find it useful...

Web site(s) of the month - health events and awareness days

There are a lot of health related events, awareness days, weeks and even months and it can be difficult to keep up with all the campaigns and know what is happening when.

Here is a few sites that can help you keep up with all the things going on throughout the year.

Web site of the month: NIHR Search Signals

NIHR Search Signals
Designed to make important research evidence easily accessible to clinicians, practitioners and managers, the NHS National Institute for Health Research have set up a service called Search Signals as part of their Dissemination Centre Portal.

Each week they publish three or four new ‘Signals’ – short summaries of health research that have appeared recently in peer-reviewed journals.

This is a free, open access site and is fully searchable. Anyone can sign up on the website to receive a monthly update of all Signals that are published, or choose to receive Signals in particular categories. There is also an RSS feed available.

This summer the Dissemination Centre launched a new product: ‘My Signals’, which gives different readers’ personal perspectives on research published in the Signals format. The latest of these has been selected by two surgeons.

Search Signals is a great way to keep up to date with short summaries of the latest evidence and expert commentary.  Highly recommended.

To sleep perchance... New blog on sleep research.

Interested in the latest research on sleep and sleeplessness? There is a brand new blog covering just this topic.

The Sleep Bulletin is produced by the Joint Education & Training library at Mid Cheshire Hospitals and will feature research articles around this topic. There isn't huge amounts of content on the blog yet but it will grow over time and is well worth a look if you have a professional (or personal) interest in sleep and insomnia.

Evidence for everyday nursing and midwifery

The UK Cochrane Centre have started a new social media based service to share the latest evidence in nursing and midwifery called Evidence for Everyday Nursing and Evidence for Everyday Midwifery.

The service offers evidence on common topics in nursing or midwifery in short summaries they call "blogshots" (like the one below), with links to the full evidence (often Cochrane reviews), if you want to look further.

See the evidence at the Cochrane Library

The service is available across a number of social media platforms, including Twitter, Facebook and Pinterest.

We think following the the hashtags #EENursing or #EEMidwifery on Twitter is the easiest way to keep up with what's new (and if you are unsure about Twitter you can contact us for help).

This is a very easy way to keep up to date with the latest evidence affecting everyday practice, and also a useful resource in helping with revalidation. You can even share it with your colleagues or the wider professional community.

If you want more information you can find it on the Evidently Cochrane blog.

Loss of saved searches and alerts from Medline and PsychINFO on the 1st April

If you have searches saved or alerts set up in either the Medline or PsychINFO databases you have until the 31st of March to act or you will lose them.

When NICE re-tendered for the National Core Content, the contract for these two databases went to a new supplier (ProQuest). Because of the differences between the two products, it will not be possible to replicate searches undertaken on the old versions when the transfer to ProQuest is made.

This applies to both HDAS (on the NICE Evidence Services site) and the native Ovid SP platform.

You will need to download any searches or alerts that you wish to keep. You can find instructions on how to do that on page 7 of this document.

Once the transition to the new database supplier has been made, you will then be able to re-enter your searches or alerts on HDAS after July 15.

If you have any questions or problems please contact us.

Major changes to Google Reader will effect our Health News Service

Daily Health News
The Official Google Reader Blog has announced some major changes to the service from next week (currently the exact time scale is unclear), including the removal of the sharing feature. This means that shortly we are no longer going to be able to use Google Reader to provide you with daily news updates.

Google say the sharing functionality will be added to their Google Plus platform, but we will need to investigate whether that can provide us with the same service, or whether we will need to seek an alternative.

Consequently their may be some interruption in the service whilst we investigate Google Plus and see what alternatives to the existing Google Reader service may be available.

What does netvibes do? It allows us to bring together information from lots of different web sites and put it all in one place. It provides all our users with a single dashboard showing the last health news, policy, comment, publications and events, without having to go to lots of different places to find the information.

Our site covers topics such as the NHS White Paper, mental health, primary care, health care policy and management, public health, and information management & technology. You will find continually updating news feeds from the NHS, NICE, the DoH, Government, CQC, Royal Colleges, King's Fund, voluntary organisations, clinical journals, the BBC, newspapers, weather, travel and transport news (covering local and national items), links to useful health related information and much more.

Although its very easy to use, netvibes can appear a little daunting at first, so we've created a new guide on how to get the best from it. The guide will show you how the site works, how to find the information you need and even how to share it with friends and colleagues.

Of course, you can always contact us if you have any questions about netvibes, or any of the other services we provide...
