The EBSCO mobile app - information on the move

The EBSCO mobile app is a new way for you to easily access high quality healthcare information on the go.

The app is a really useful tool for searching, providing quick and easy access to content wherever you are. From one search box you can search across library resources and online content including journal articles, guidelines, e-books, evidence summaries and more.

It features simple, mobile-friendly displays for searching, scanning results, liking, and sharing. 

You can also save content into your folder which will then be accessible on the EBSCO platform, meaning you can synchronise your searches and saved information automatically across multiple devices.

To get you started we have created a quick guide to the app, covering setting up and logging in, as well as searching and saving content. You can find on our website here.

EBSCO also have a video tutorial which you can find on YouTube.

The only other thing you will need is an OpenAthens password, and if you don't already have one, it is the work of a few minutes to register online at https://openathens.nice.org.uk/.

The app is free to download and available on Google Play for Android devices and Apple's App Store for iOS, or you can scan the QR code below.

Updated Clinical Key app now available

An updated version of the Clinical Key mobile app is now available.

Clinical Key is an easy to use resource with a wealth of content including:

• Over 800 full text electronic journals, including the complete Lancet series of titles
• Over 960 full text electronic books
• Over 1,300 clinical overviews giving comprehensive clinical topic summaries 
• Over 2,500 drug monographs by Gold Standard
• Over 300 procedures consult topics
• Clinical guidelines (including NICE)
• Videos and other multimedia content
• Patient education materials in a variety of languages

Clinical Key also allows you to:

• Capture the information you use to develop CME credits
• Create presentations from multimedia content
• Store favourite items for easy access
• Save searches

The enhanced and redesigned mobile app is available now for iOS (Apple) and Android devices. There is a quick reference sheet for guidance on how to download, authenticate and optimize the mobile experience.

You can also access Clinical Key online with a web browser.

For both App and online access, you will need a trust OpenAthens account. NHFT and NGH staff and students on placement can register for one here https://openathens.nice.org.uk/.

Browzine trial extended

The Library's trial of BrowZine has now been extended until the end of March. BrowZine is a new way to access all our full text journal content from a simple interface or by using the app. 

Browzine is a smart, easy-to-use service which enables you to:

• Browse our journal subscriptions to see what titles we hold in your specialty / areas of interest 
• Browse table of contents of our journals and link straight through to the full text of most articles
• Bookmark your favourite journals and receive alerts on your mobile device when new articles are published in that journal

If you need access to information on the go, the Browzine app is available for Android phones and tablets, the Kindle Fire (Amazon) and iOS (Apple) for iPhones and iPads.

If you don't want to use an app, you can also access Browzine through any computer.

Important changes to the BNF and BNFC apps

There is a new version of the BNF and BNFC apps now available.

The previous versions produced by NICE will soon stop being updated and so it is important to install the new one in order to ensure you are using the latest information.

The good news is that the new version has been completely redesigned and no longer requires you to log in with an OpenAthens password. The app is being made freely available to any non-commercial users in the UK (it is not available outside the UK)

The new version also contains all the information from both the BNF and the BNFC in a single interface (you can select which you want from a drop down menu).

The app can be configured to automatically update itself (which is does on a monthly basis) so you can always be sure you are using the most current information.

There is also an evidence grading feature where you can see the strength of the evidence behind recommendations within the content.

The app is currently available for iOS (Apple) and Android devices. There is no Windows phone version at present.

Guest WiFi at the Berrywood & Isebrook libraries

We have had access to staff WiFi for some time but there is now WiFi freely available for visitors at the Berrywood and Isebrook libraries (and throughout the hospitals).

To connect your device simple turn on the WiFi, select NHFT-Guest and open your web browser. Enter your email address and once you have accepted the terms and conditions you will be connected.

You connection will last for up to two hours after which you may need to re-select the guest WiFi.

Medical Masterclass - now available as an app

Medical Masterclass is a learning package designed to help trainee physicians as well as and doctors undertaking the MRCP.

We have had a subscription to the web site for some time, but the Royal College of Physicians has now produced a rather nifty app as another way to access this revision package.

Available for both Android and iOS (Apple) devices, the app is a well designed, easy to use way of accessing all the content from Medical Masterclass. It also tracks your performance as you go through revision questions, giving you a good idea of how you are performing.

The app itself is free, but to set up an account on Medical Masterclass you will need to contact the Richmond Library to obtain a user name and password to access the content.

If you are a doctor in training, undertaking the MRCP or just wanting to test your medical knowledge, Medical Masterclass is a good starting point and the new app has just made it even easier to access.

Stay up-to-date with some of your favourite journals with the Ovid Today app

Did you know you can get access to all the electronic journals the library gets from Ovid through a single free iPad app?

Ovid Today lets you browse, read and save your favourite journals directly from your iPad. With Ovid Today you can:

• Stay up to date with the very latest journal content (including publications ahead of print
• Access 6 months worth of rolling content
• Search for and select your favourite Ovid journals to follow
• Browse specialisms and journal tables of contents
• Read a PDF of any article
• Create a personal reading list and add articles to review later

To get started with Ovid Today simply download the app from iTunes (it is not currently available for Android devices). If you are a registered member of library you will then need to contact us to obtain the OvidSP ID and password to gain access to our journals. If you are not registered with us you will need to come into the library.

Once your account is set up you will be ready to start adding the journal titles you are interested in to your carousel, and away you go...

Changes in access to the BNF and BNFC online

Both the BNF and the BNF for Children have moved web sites. They are now no longer available from the bnf.org address, but are now both hosted on the Medicines Complete site.

To access them directly use the links below:

If you are using a device on an NHS network you should be able to access both versions without the need to log in.

If you are using them from outside of the NHS, you will need to have an Open Athens account to enable you to log in.

Both the BNF and BNFC are also available as an App for Android and iOS (Apple) devices via the NICE web site. Again you will need to log into Athens when you download the App to confirm your eligibility.

Need help managing your library books? We've got an app for that...

The free BookMyne app from SirsiDynix, for both Apple and Android devices, allows you to manage your access to the library from your smartphone or tablet.

BookMyne offers a lot of convenient features, making it quick and easy to search our collections on the move, find the items you need and manage your account.


BookMyne enables you to:

• Search for items by title, author or subject
• Reserve any title in our catalogue and select which library you would like to collect it from
• Edit or cancel your reservations (we all change our minds sometimes)
• See when a reserved item becomes available
• See all the items on loan to you
• See if you have any fines
• Renew any loans and see when items are approaching their due date (and never have a library fine again!)
• Use your phone's camera to scan a book's barcode to instantly check if there are copies in the library

Once you've downloaded the app, all you will need to get started is your library card and your PIN (which you can get from any of the libraries if you don't already have it and also allows you to log in and use our online catalogue).

We think BookMyne is an easy way to find the information you need, stay on top of your loans and reservations and avoid those pesky fines by always having your books returned or renewed on time.

Web site of the month: My Health Apps

The My Health Apps.net site was developed by the UK based PatientView organisation, in partnership with others and encouraged by NHS England.

The site brings together Apps with a healthcare focus from around the world (currently there over 300 in English, but this is expected to grow). They range from Apps for exercise to those that focus on managing specific conditions, with some also aimed at carers. You can browse the Apps by topic, by language or by device platform.

The Apps have been reviewed by patients and voluntary groups and are all scored with a "heart rating". This rating has 5 elements and covers how the App: 

• Helps to control a condition / keep you healthy
• Is trustworthy
• Is easy to use
• Allows you to network with others in a similar position
• Can be used regularly

The site features Apps for a variety of smartphone and mobile device platforms including Android, Apple, Blackberry, Nokia, Windows and browser based. Some of the Apps are free whilst others have to be purchased.

You can also find more Apps in the NHS England Health Apps Library (which have been vetted and approved by the NHS).

Health and care apps & tools directory advance preview

This is the alpha version of the Health & Care Online Tools Directory, which will be launched by the NHS Commissioning Board in early 2013. This will provide a trusted directory of online tools for the public and care professionals.

Covering more than just apps for smartphones or tablets, the directory also includes software that is accessed and run through a standard web browser.

All featured tools will have appropriate medical safety and quality vetting, with users (both care professionals and the public) being able to rate and comment on the usefulness of individual online tools.

As it is an alpha site, a lot of content is still to come, but you can see some of the tools already listed by clinical condition. For example:

• Cancer
• Diabetes 
• Mental health
