Health and Care Video Library

Funded by the NHS, the Health and Care Video Library consists of over 600 free health related videos.

Developed in partnership with an NHS trust, the videos have all been approved by a clinician and they cover topics such as dementia, diabetes, heart disease, learning disabilities, mental health, pregnancy, and vaccines.

There are also a number of ‘how to’ and ‘what to expect’ videos alongside.

https://healthandcarevideos.uk/

The videos are aimed at patients who need support, care or more information at home, but can be useful for NHS staff and students too.

The video library is also linked from the NHS.UK home page and all the content is also available via an app.

Health Information Week day 5: Easy Health #HIW2019

Health Information Week is a national, multi-sector campaign to promote high quality information for patients and the public. High quality health information can have a huge impact on people’s ability to stay healthy and manage illnesses effectively, giving them a better quality of life.

Our campaign this year is focused on enabling clinicians to access good quality information aimed at the public which they can recommend to patients.

We have also produced Helping you to help your patients, which is a brief guide to evaluating information as well as recommendations for sites where you can find trusted information aimed at patients.

For day 5 of Health Information Week we are looking at the Easy Health web site.

Easy Health is a valuable source of patient information leaflets and videos in an accessible and easy-read format, ideal for patients with learning disabilities or communication difficulties.

The leaflets are produced by a range of healthcare organisations, charities, and NHS Trusts. Just click on “Health Leaflets” to browse by topic or use the search box to search.

For highly accessible information, we thoroughly recommend Easy Health.

We hope you have enjoyed our series of short items on sites that you can use to provide good quality information to your patients and the public. Please contact one of the libraries if you have any questions...

Web site of the month: The NHS on Film

To Celebrate the 70th anniversary, the British Film Institute have made available a large selection of films about the NHS for free.

With films going back to the NHS's foundation in 1948, there is a wide range of material covering a selection of health related topics.

From the creation of the NHS and the wider welfare state in the 1940s, this is a fascinating (and sometimes amusing) collection of films including historical snippets, instructional and training items, documentaries, animated items and the ever-popular public information film (sometimes featuring some "interesting" period hairstyles and clothes).

These are as much a document of their times as they are of the NHS and the NHS on Film collection is well worth a look.

How does the NHS work?

The King's Fund have created a short video, How does the NHS work? An alternative guide, to give a snapshot of how the NHS is currently structured and the changes it is currently working on to improve both patient care and sustainability.

The guide gives you a clear overview of the structure of the NHS in 2017 and the wide variety of organisations that are involved in the management and inspection of services and the care of patients, as well as current changes and developments.

If you have every wondered what an STP or ACS is, or want to know more about the Five Year Forward View, this short animation will give you the answers.

Get an introduction to what we can offer you in our new promo video

Regular readers may recall a while ago we blogged about the filming that was taking place in the libraries. Our two student film makers both completed promotional videos for the Library Service and we are very pleased with the results.

We have uploaded the first video to our YouTube channel. Keep an eye out for the second one which will feature later in the year.

This video will give you a glimpse of who we are and what we can do to support NGH and NHFT staff in practice and education.

Lights, camera, action - filming in the libraries on the 29th of February and 1st of March.

There will be two student film makers in the libraries on Monday the 29th and Tuesday the 1st, shooting a promotional film for us.

They won't be asking anyone to appear in the film to be interviewed (unless you would like to volunteer!), but if you prefer not to be featured in any of the background shots, please let us know and we will ensure you will not end up appearing in the final footage.

Web site (sort of) of the month: ScHARR Research Hacks

Not strictly speaking a web site, this is a playlist of videos on YouTube from the School of Health and Related Research at the University of Sheffield.

The videos are all short (mostly around 1 minute) and feature a range of useful tools to enable researchers (or anyone else) to better able to find and share information as well as tips on collaborating.

The topics covered include using Google Drive and Netvibes, making a podcast, having an online meeting, Google Scholar and many more.

You can also download all the videos via iTunes.

For anyone interested in research or collaborative working, we think this is a really useful resource.

Library information skills programme for 2016

Need to find information to support your clinical practice? Need to make a decision but can't find the supporting evidence? Starting a course but can't find the study material? Found the evidence but unsure what it means? We can help.

All of our training programme dates for 2016 are now available on the Library's web site.

"The Pre-course Course made studying so much easier"
Our courses are free to access for staff and attached students from Northamptonshire Healthcare and Northampton General Hospital.

They are aimed at both clinicians and managers who want to be able to find and use the best possible evidence to support their decision making.

The courses run at a variety of locations including the Berrywood and Northampton General hospitals, as well as Bevan House in Kettering.

So what do we offer?

If you are about to return to studying a formal programme, our Pre-course Course may be just the thing. The course is designed to equip you with the information skills you need to make the path through you programme that bit easier. The 3 hour sessions cover things like finding the material on your reading lists, using databases and how to identify good quality information. It also covers searching for evidence and guidelines and how to access electronic journals. Everything you should need to get you started.

If you need to find research, then our Literature Searching course may be the answer. This will enable you to effectively search a number of databases such as Medline, HMIC (healthcare management) or the British Nursing Index through the NHS's HDAS interface. We'll show you how to search, save your results and even access full text journal articles, straight from the databases.

Once you have found the evidence, you need to know if it is any good and what it means, and again, we can help with that via our Critical Appraisal Skills programme.

So what is the NNT in this RCT then?
Our Introduction to Critical Appraisal workshop will take you through the statistics, terminology and process, while our highly interactive Critical Appraisal in Action session gives you the opportunity to appraise a research article in a group facilitated by one of our librarians.

As well as our published workshops, we can also create tailored sessions for you team or department, and  we can always do a one to one session if you can't make any of our published dates, and we can even come to you.

Finally, if face to face training is not your thing, or you just want a little help, we have a selection of videos on our YouTube channel that can help you with getting to grips with some of these skills.

Exploding subject headings - a new video on our YouTube channel

We've added a new video to our YouTube channel. Exploding subject headings shows you how to expand your search results by using the explode option to include all the related narrower subject headings in the thesaurus.

You can follow the whole process of conducting a literature search by using our literature searching and literature searching using subject headings play lists. Most of our individual videos are around 2 minutes in length (the longest is just over 4).

We've updated our guides to using electronic journals, the Cochrane Library and the NICE Evidence Search site

Due to recent changes to the NICE Evidence Search we have completely updated our user guide to the site. The guide shows you how to get the best out of the site, how to use filters to make your search results more precise, as well as covering the other resources available including NICE Pathways, the Clinical Knowledge Summaries and more.

Our guide to using electronic journals has also been updated. It shows you how to find individual journal titles in a number of different ways and how to access the full text articles from any of the titles we subscribe too.

The Cochrane Library site has also been recently upgraded so we have revamped our guide to using this key evidence based resource. Our guide shows you the different methods you can use to search Cochrane, including topic browsing, advanced searching and even using MESH headings to obtain more precise results. It contains useful search tips and screenshots throughout (as do our other guides).

You can also find all of guides we have produced on our web site.

As well as written guides, you can also find support via our training programme, course hand-outs, our video tutorials on YouTube, or by simply contacting us for help.

Need help with reading lists, reserving or renewing your books? Our updated videos might just be the thing...

Our Channel
We have just updated three of our short (the longest is around 2 minutes) video tutorials on YouTube to help you find and manage the books you borrow from us.

If you are a student either on placement with us or a member of staff undertaking a programme of study, we are able to help you find the material you want on your reading lists. Our video, How to find books on your reading lists shows you how to access everything from your list in one go.

If you find the books you want on our catalogue and want to reserve them, this video shows you how to do it (including specifying which library you would like to collect them from).

Finally, once you have books on loan from us you may want to avoid those pesky overdue fines. Our video on renewing your library books through the library catalogue ensures you can keep them in date without having to come into the library and never have another fine.

Don't forget, we also have the free BookMyne App for smartphones and tablets to help you search our catalogue and manage your loans.

Need help with literature searching? We have created some new videos on how to use HDAS more effectively

We have added some new titles to our YouTube channel. The videos show how to get the most out of the NICE Evidence Services Healthcare Databases (HDAS) such as Medline or the British Nursing Index by using subject headings to improve the speed and accuracy of your searching.

There is a play list called Literature searching: using the subject headings so you can watch all 4 videos in sequence to understand the whole process (a total of less than 7 minutes).

Alternatively you can watch the individual videos:
You can also find other videos that take you through the whole process of conducting a basic literature search from selecting the best database to find what you want, through to selecting and saving you results and even setting up an automated alert to let you know when new material in your area of interest is published.

Our videos are short and detailed enough to take you through the process of literature searching in a methodical, step-by-step manner. Don't forget, you can also book on a training session with the Library Service if you want a more human touch!

New videos available on our YouTube channel

We've recently added two new short videos to our YouTube channel.

Creating alerts to newly published articles shows you how to use the NHS databases (HDAS) to set up an automatic alert that will email you when new articles are added on a topic of your choice. It's a really useful feature that makes it easy to keep up with new publications on almost any health related subject.

De-duplicating search results shows you how to remove duplicate articles from your search results in HDAS when using more than one database.

These new videos are in addition to the titles already available which include:
  • Registering for an NHS Athens password
  • Logging in and selecting a database
  • Doing a simple search
  • Saving your search results
  • Using the clipboard to bring together results from different databases into a single document
You can even  follow the whole literature searching process from start to finish by using our play list.

Web site of the month: Our YouTube Channel!

We know it's hard to find the time to come on a workshop (but if you can we run a programme of different information skills training workshops) or you may only need a refresher on how to do something specific.

We have created our own YouTube channel and have developed some very short training videos to help get you through the process of searching the healthcare databases to find information.

Our current videos cover:
Each video if fully illustrated with screen recordings and step-by-step instructions. They are also "bite sized", mainly between 2 and 3 minutes long and are even suitable for use while you are trying to search.

We will be developing more videos over time, and would love to have your feedback on what we have done so far and if there are any other topics you would like to see us cover.

Film - The Voice of Dementia

The 14 minute film, Voice of Dementia shows people with dementia talking about their lives, their diagnosis and the importance of being listed to. It challenges the notion that people who receive this diagnosis are unable to have a say about their lives, and the services that they receive.

The film was a collaborative production between Sheffield Health and Social Care NHS Foundation Trust and the Alzheimer's Society Sheffield.

E-learning resource for doctors: apprasial and revalidation

The London Deanery have recently launched a set of e-learning resources to support doctors in appraisal and revalidation.

They are freely available for all doctors including primary care, secondary care and mental health and those in private healthcare.

The resources are aimed at supporting both appraisees and appraisers by providing guidance, tips and useful information about the appraisal process.

These online learning modules take about 45 - 60 minutes to complete and cover a range of key
topics helpful for both appraisees and appraisers:
The modules are hosted on the BMJ learning platform and any doctor is able to register for free access.

As well as e-learning modules there are a collection of several short bite sized films (3-4 minutes)
covering a range of key topics, helpful for both appraisees and appraisers :
