Leisure reading - what would you like to read for fun?

The Library Service has been very fortunate to have succeeded in a bid to Greenheart, the charitable fund for some funding to set up a leisure reading collection.

Although we already have a small collection of fiction titles (mainly donated by library staff), we would like to know what you would like to read.

What would make you want to borrow a book?

The latest Booker nominee? A thriller? Sci fi? Romance? The classics? Maybe gardening is more your thing? Hobbies and crafts? Military history?

Whatever it might be that takes your literary fancy, please take a few minutes to complete our short survey (just 6 questions) on what you would like to see in our new leisure collection.

Whenever you do a search in Clinical Key if there is a topic overview it will appear as the first result and also in a box on the right of the page.

Clinical Overviews are not book or journal content; they are concise, easily scannable summaries which include evidence-based information, current guidelines, and the latest advances on medical conditions. Clinical Overviews are tailored for clinicians.

Richmond Library temporary closure 16th - 22nd of November

The Richmond Library at Northampton General Hospital will be closing at 1:00 pm on Friday the 16th of November until Thursday the 22nd.

This is to allow for the replacement of the carpet in a large section of the library.

During this time the library will be completely closed (including out of hours access) to all staff.

Requests for journal articles and other items can still be made during the closed period by email and we will do our best to provide them.

We apologise for the inevitable inconvenience, but parts of the flooring are getting very worn and will soon present a health and safety issue if they are not replaced now.

Both Berrywood and Isebrook libraries will remain open as normal during this period.

Disruption to computer access Tuesday the 6th & Wednesday 7th of November at the Richmond Library

We are having some essential maintenance carried out on our computers on Tuesday the 6th and Wednesday the 7th of November at the Richmond Library.

There will inevitably be some disruption and it is possible we will be asking users to move computers from time to time as the work proceeds.

We apologise for any inconvenience this may cause.

Medical terminology can be highly confusing, with lots of technical terms, abbreviations and jargon (sometimes with the same term meaning different things).

Even for health professionals this can sometimes prove difficult.

Web site of the month: Stoptober

The Stoptober website is full of information and resources to aiming to give smokers the best possible chance of quitting.

By answering a few simple questions, the site will help you develop a personal quitting plan with tailored resources to help you succeed.

It also features information on aids to help you stop smoking, including nicotine replacement and electronic cigarettes as well as technological solutions like the Stoptober App, a Facebook community Messenger chat, daily support by email, and links to local face-to-face support.

The Stoptober site is a really useful site for anyone thinking of quitting. Given that if you stop smoking for 28 days you are 5 times more likely to stay a nonsmoker, Stoptober is the perfect opportunity to start stopping for good...

Apps & electronic resources drop-in session, Tuesday 18th September

The library is holding an all day drop-in session on Tuesday the 18th of September, in the Library, Berrywood Hospital.

New books available for review

We want to be sure that the books we buy are the books you actually need to support your work and learning.

We review publisher's catalogues, scan reading lists and peruse different web sites, but what we like best is when you tell us what you need.

That is where our books on approval scheme comes in.

Every two months our supplier sends us a selection of new publications on relevant health topics which are available for you to review and suggest titles for us to purchase (or sometimes, not to purchase!).

Our current selections will be available at the Berrywood and Richmond libraries until Friday the 21st of September. Topics covered include:

• Autism & ADHD
• CBT
• Healthcare management
• Medicine
• Mental health, psychiatry and psychology
• Nursing and midwifery
• ...and more

Of course we are always happy to have recommendations for new stock on any health related topic.

You can also find a list of titles we have recently purchased (including previous On Approvals) on our web site and all of our stock via the library catalogue.

Richmond Library headphones plea

If you have borrowed a set of headphones from the Richmond Library we would be really grateful if you would return them (no questions asked!). We are missing a number of pairs and we would really rather spend money on books and journals than replacing headphones.

August bank holiday closure

The Libraries will be unstaffed on Monday the 27th of August for the bank holiday.



Access will still be available for registered members via our swipe card system at the Berrywood and Richmond libraries (just don't forget to bring your library card!), but Isebrook Library will be closed.

We reopen as normal on Tuesday the 28th at all of our sites.
