New books available for review

We want to be sure that the books we buy are the books you actually need to support your work and learning.

We review publisher's catalogues, scan reading lists and peruse different web sites, but what we like best is when you tell us what you need.

That is where our books on approval scheme comes in.

Every two months our supplier sends us a selection of new publications on relevant health topics which are available for you to review and suggest titles for us to purchase (or sometimes, not to purchase!).

Our current selections will be available at the Berrywood and Richmond libraries until Friday the 21st of September. Topics covered include:

• Mental health, psychiatry and psychology
• Nursing and midwifery
• ...and more

Of course we are always happy to have recommendations for new stock on any health related topic.

You can also find a list of titles we have recently purchased (including previous On Approvals) on our web site and all of our stock via the library catalogue.

Richmond Library headphones plea

If you have borrowed a set of headphones from the Richmond Library we would be really grateful if you would return them (no questions asked!). We are missing a number of pairs and we would really rather spend money on books and journals than replacing headphones.

August bank holiday closure

The Libraries will be unstaffed on Monday the 27th of August for the bank holiday.



Access will still be available for registered members via our swipe card system at the Berrywood and Richmond libraries (just don't forget to bring your library card!), but Isebrook Library will be closed.

We reopen as normal on Tuesday the 28th at all of our sites.

Advance notice - apps and eResources day, Tuesday 18th of September

We'll be holding a drop in event at Berrywood Library on Tuesday the 18th of September looking at the apps available to Trust staff and the wide selection of electronic journals, books and other resources available.

There will also be refreshments available and the odd freebie too!

Whenever you do a search in Clinical Key if there is a topic overview it will appear as the first result and also in a box on the right of the page.

Web site for the month: Critical Care Northampton

We have picked a site with a local connection this month, Critical Care Northampton. The site was founded by Northampton General Hospital consultant Jonny Wilkinson and is a great resource for anyone interested in FOAMed (Free Open Access Medical Education), emergency care, ITU, anaesthesia and POCUS (Point of Care Ultra Sound).

We know it isn't always easy to find the time to get to grips with electronic resources, which is why we have produced a number of handy guides to help you get the most out of them with the minimum of effort.

Our guide are practical with lots of screenshots to help you use our e-resources like a librarian!

We have recently updated three:

• The Cochrane Library - our guide will help you use the powerful search feature to find high quality evidence 
• Journals A-Z - a guide to finding and accessing thousands of online electronic journal titles using your OpenAthens log in
• NICE Evidence Search - our guide will show you how to search for high quality. NICE accredited information

Web site of the month: The NHS on Film

To Celebrate the 70th anniversary, the British Film Institute have made available a large selection of films about the NHS for free.

With films going back to the NHS's foundation in 1948, there is a wide range of material covering a selection of health related topics.

From the creation of the NHS and the wider welfare state in the 1940s, this is a fascinating (and sometimes amusing) collection of films including historical snippets, instructional and training items, documentaries, animated items and the ever-popular public information film (sometimes featuring some "interesting" period hairstyles and clothes).

These are as much a document of their times as they are of the NHS and the NHS on Film collection is well worth a look.

Although London based, the Wiki is a really useful resource for anyone interested in social prescribing or self care.

Web site of the month: That's Nonsense!

It has been a while since we last featured web sites that allow you check the facts of an internet news story (see our post from January 17), so we thought it was about time to feature another.

That's Nonsense is a UK based site that "deals with debunking Internet hoaxes, hearsay, rumours and fake news". The site promises unbiased reporting and links to reputable sources.

The site features different sections covering:

• Latest Internet related news covering things like scams, circulating rumours and privacy issues
• Facebook related scams 
• The latest Internet based hoaxes and rumours
• A series of tutorials aimed at helping you improve your online privacy, avoid scams and stay secure on the Internet

Of particular interest to social media users (and you can also follow them on Facebook, Pinterest and Twitter), That's Nonsense is a useful resource to help you spot the hoaxes, avoid the scams and stay safe on the Internet.
