Mind the gap: a handbook of clinical signs in black and brown skin

Mind the gap is a free, downloadable UK ebook. It offers images of conditions on black and brown skin (that are frequently omitted from medical text books) and is a useful support for diagnosing conditions in people from a BME background.

The book was produced by Black and Brown Skin as a tool to support medical education when treating patients with darker skin "to aid earlier and more accurate diagnosis, increased patient satisfaction and greater confidence for healthcare professionals when treating people of colour" (from the web site).

iHealth Facts - health claims fact checked

iHealth Facts is a web site aimed at the public where you can quickly check on how reliable health related claims are and what the evidence is to support them.

The site also aims to help the public to use evidence to make their own health related decisions.

You can use the site to search for any health related question, as well as seeing the reply to previous enquiries.

Questions are answered with a simple summary, as well as having links to the research and an overview of the evidence used.

The site is run by Health Research Board-Trials Methodology Research Network (HRB-TMRN), Evidence Synthesis Ireland and Cochrane Ireland.

We are working on reopening

The Library Service is working towards reopening the physical library sites. 

The Trust is currently undertaking risk assessments of the library spaces for reopening and once this has been completed, action plans will be produced to put in place all the measures necessary to allow us to safely welcome our users back.

Free access to Oxford Medicine Online

Oxford University Press have offered free access to the entirety of Oxford Medicine Online until the end of June to support the NHS during the Covid-19 outbreak.

Oxford Medicine Online contains a large amount of titles from OUP, all accessible via your OpenAthens log in.

We have also added the books with links to the full text to our library catalogue to make them easy to find (and of course, you can find all of our other stock on the catalogue too).

Just click the link in the catalogue record, scroll and click on ‘Sign in via your institution’ on the left hand side then select ‘NHS in England’ to log in with your NHS OpenAthens account. If you don't have an NHS OpenAthens account, you can register online for one here.

OUP have also put together a free selection of resources, journal articles and book chapters specifically on COVID-19, coronaviruses and related subjects which you can find here. 

Libraries closed to visitors but still providing services

Due to the ongoing COVID-19 outbreak all the libraries are now closed to visitors. This includes out of hours access.

However, library staff are still working to provide you with a service and we are available if you need:

• A literature search 
• A journal article 
• A book or other document
• Help with using databases or accessing electronic journals
• Anything else library related...

Please contact one of the libraries and we will do our best to give you what you need.

You can also access our (new) catalogue online at https://nhft.koha-ptfs.co.uk/ which will show you everything we have in stock and provide links to all of  the ebooks we have which you can access online with your OpenAthens password (and if you don't have one of those you can register for one here).

You can find information about all the services we offer on our web site, including links to journals, databases, the Royal Marsden Manual and other ebooks and everything else we provide.

All library training cancelled

Northamptonshire Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust (of which Library Services is a part) has decided that all training should be cancelled until at least the end of June as part of their response to the COVID-19 situation.

We are sorry that we can no longer provide this training but there are some online alternatives that you could use.

Health Education England have provided an online course in planning a search and using the Healthcare Databases (HDAS) to carry it out. You can do the training without logging in but if you do it will not record your progress. If you wish to log in you can use an NHS OpenAthens account.

You will also need an OpenAthens account to use the NHS databases for searching for journal articles (module 7). If you do not have one you can register from here. If you already have an account but have problems with it please contact the library.

If you need a work-related literature search done then you can also contact the library and ask us to do that for you.

There is an online tutorial on critical appraisal. This covers RCTs, systematic reviews and economic evaluations and in each case there is a tutorial and a paper that you can download to appraise and then check your answers against the ones on the site.

The Understanding Health Research site also has a tool which guides you through a series of questions to help you to review and interpret a published health research paper.

New edition of the Royal Marsden Manual of Clinical and Cancer Nursing Procedures now available

The new 10th edition of the Royal Marsden Manual is now available online (we will order print copies when they are published in May).

The Manual is nationally recognised as the essential guide to clinical nursing skills. The online edition is very easy to use, allowing you to search or browse through topic headings.

The fully updated 10th edition provides up-to-date, evidence-based clinical skills procedures related to essential aspects of patient care.

The procedures in the Manual are based on the latest research findings and advice from clinical experts, to enable students and qualified nurses to provide the best possible care. Advance warning of disruption to library services on the 16th and 17th March

Last year we took the decision to review our library management system (the software that runs our catalogue and allows us to issue and return books etc.). Following on from that process we decided to switch to a new system - Koha.

What does this mean for all our users?

There will be some disruption on the 16th and 17th of March to normal service while we transfer to Koha which means our catalogue will not be available.

What do you need to know now?

• If you need a list of books you have borrowed from us please print this (or ask staff for help) before March 13th. It will not be possible to provide you with a list after this date.
• The Bookmyne app will no longer work from March 16th.
