Health Promotion Resources Reopened

NHS Milton Keynes & Northamptonshire have now reopened the Health Promotion Resources Service.

 

New Information for Visiting Booth Meadow House

All service members are asked to pre-book an appointment if they wish to visit Booth Meadow House to view or collect resources.  Appointments are available after 9.30 am and before 4.00 pm during the week. Due to the new service arrangements we can no longer continue providing access for a "Drop in Service"     

 

The Health Promotion Resources Unit staff  would appreciate it if everyone who needs to view the catalogues at Booth Meadow House call or email to book in your visit to avoid disappointment.

GMC launches new online resource for doctors on treating patients with learning disabilities

Most doctors believe that patients with a learning disability receive poorer care than rest of the population, according to a poll commissioned by the General Medical Council.

The poll also showed that doctors would like a source of good quality practical advice on treating people with learning disabilities and as a result of that the GMC has launched an extensive new online resource. The site aims to help doctors provide better care for people with learning disabilities by providing interactive learning and:

• identifying the key issue in providing better quality care
• highlighting patient perspectives on the care they want to receive
• showing how to put GMC guidance into practice.

The RCN launches moneysmart - a complete guide to finances for students nurses

MoneySmart

Moneysmart is a free interactive guide to finance for student nurses. It covers bursaries and budgeting as well as benefit entitlements and information on housing and accommodation. There is even a top ten money saving tips list.

It's an essential guide for any student nurse who wants to make their money go further.

The Foundation of Nusing Studies: Innovative nursing projects reports

FoNS have supported innovation and funded projects in nursing since 2002. They have now changed the format of their project documents and launched one page summary reports, which include key information for changing practice.

These brief overviews are available free of charge on the FoNS web site under their Dissemination Series. There are many reports available, but those from the current volume (7) include:

• meeting the needs of people with bladder problems after stroke
• promoting physical health in people with mental health needs
• working effectively with people who have learning disabilities and offending behaviour

Reports are searchable by keyword or project title.

The Library's collection reflects the wide range of services provided in all the NHS trusts we serve and we are constantly updating it. Every month we produce a list of new titles we have obtained.

You can now see what we have added to our collection in April (handily arranged by subject area).

We are always happy to receive recommendations for new items to buy, and we also have a selection of titles on approval which you can view and recommend for purchase.

You can find all the stock from all of our sites, including items we have on order on our catalogue.

 All the Libraries will be unstaffed on Friday the 6th and Monday the 9th of April for the Easter bank holidays.

Access will still be available for registered members via our swipe card system at the Berrywood and Richmond Libraries. We will reopen as normal on Tuesday the 10th.

Information skills training in April

There are still some places left on our information skills programme in April:

• Evidence for Health
  A hands on workshop focused on some of the best health information resources on the web, including NHS Evidence, the Cochrane Library and Trip.
• Literature Searching
  An introduction to searching for the published literature on databases like Medline and the British Nursing Index.
• Critical Appraisal: an introduction
  The basics of assessing the quality of research evidence.
• Critical Appraisal: in action
  a interactive follow up group session giving you the opportunity to appraise a randomised controlled trial.

We can also tailor a session for you individually, or in groups. If you need training for your team, something for a PLT session or even for an event or conference, we can help. Contact us for more information.

11th Edition of the Maudsley Prescribing Guidelines in Psychiatry now available online

The newest edition of the Maudsley Prescribing Guidelines in Psychiatry is now available online as part of the national core content of electronic books and journals provided to NHS staff in England.

To access the guidelines you will need to go to the MyiLibrary site and click the Athens link at the bottom of the page. Enter your Athens user name and password and you will then be able to access the book.

If you don't have an Athens account NHS staff and attached students can register for one online. If you have an account but have forgotten the password you can reset it here.

If you need more help in accessing this, or the many other electronic books available to you via your NHS Athens account, we have produced a guide on how to use them which you can find on our web site, along with additional guides to e-journals, databases and more.

NICE guidance app launched for smartphones

NICE has launched an app which allows free access to all of its recommendations and advice for healthcare professional users of Android and iPhone smartphones.
 
The app allows users to search, browse and explore 760 pieces of guidance produced by NICE. Guidance is arranged by clinical or public health topic and particular sections can be bookmarked for easy access, or sent via email.
 
Other features include receiving automatic updates and new guidance as soon as it is published on the NICE website, adjustable font size for readability, and the ability to 'swipe' between chapters when looking at guidance.
 
It can be downloaded from Apple's iStore and the Android Market but is not currently optimised for iPad users.

Northamptonshire child health and wellbeing information

Child & Maternal Health

As part of the national Child and Maternal Health Observatory’s (ChiMat) work with the East of England Public Health Observatory, updated Local Authority Child Health Profiles have been published. These provide a snapshot of child health and wellbeing in March 2012 and are designed to help you improve the health of children and tackle health inequalities by giving easy to digest information about the current picture of child health in your local area.

Each profile provides two types of information: background demographic information about the children in each area; and comparative analysis with other local authorities both nationally and more locally.

A number of changes and additions to the 2012 profiles compared with those issued in 2011. These include:

·         More information about mental health

·         Introduction of breastfeeding at 6 to 8 weeks where data are available

·         Trend information about hospital admissions for alcohol

·         Comparisons with statistical neighbours looking at teenage conceptions, teenage mothers, MMR immunisation and breastfeeding initiation

 The site also offers an interactive profiles for local areas, and as well as child health, these also cover Healthy Schools, infant mortality and breastfeeding.
